It's always important to be in tune with our bodies, to notice any changes, & act accordingly. No matter the age, we have the power to change our health & lifestyle; just ask Lisa, who at age 12, discovered she had Acid Reflux disease and took the steps necessary to change her life. This is her story.
Lisa: I'm Lisa. I'm 22. I have acid reflux. It started when I as about 12 years old. I just noticed every morning after breakfast, I would get really bad stomach aches, but it was particularly worse at night after I ate. And anything acidic. After I ate like orange juice, or like any sort of fruit, I had a extremely bad stomach ache. So I went to the doctor. They upper GI, a Barium test, and they took pictures of my stomach and watched it as I swallow, and they determined that I have acid reflux. Some days it would be really bad, and some days it won't be bad at all, but the key thing for me is to remember to take my medicine even if it doesn't hurt because I noticed that if I'm lazy a couple of days or if, you know, I feel great, like I don't need to take it, and a couple days later, I'll be in a lot of pain. It also helps if you kind of elevate yourself at night, because, as you can imagine, your esophagus is straight, so when you're lying down, it just goes right up. I think acid reflux has just made me aware of my body because if I start to neglect how I'm feeling, that's when it gets worse. And that's when progress isn't made. And its just all about paying attention to myself. And that just really helps me get in touch with who I am physically. So that's, I think, one of the major benefits of this.
