My Life / Asperger's Syndrome - O.G.'s Story

About this video:

Meet O.G., an art student living in New York who also happens to have Asperger's Syndrome. In this episode, O.G. shares how her condition played a role in her youth and how she has learned to overcome the obstacles associated with this mysterious disorder. This is O.G.'s story.

O.G.: I suffered from various forms of Asperger's and Dyslexia as a child. My mother told me when I was little, that sometimes when children talk a lot when they're around 3 or 4, I had some language disabilities, where I wouldn't properly respond. I noticed that I, whenever a teacher would read me a book, I would be very misunderstanding, I could hardly remember anything I read, sometimes in cases I couldn't socialize with kids properly, I would throw many temper tantrums, and I was often rejected and bullied by many other kids. The worst part of it, was feeling like I was misunderstood, and nobody really cared about me or wanted to understand me, and they just wanted to run away from me when I wanted attention. But as I learned proper social skills in middle school going to special private schools with kids with learning disabilities, I slowly became more confident in myself and my teachers were pointing out what I was doing wrong to approach people the wrong way. And so it was all a matter of trial and error, where finally I learned how to socialize calmly, and get to know people in an appropriate way. I kinda learned to exercise my speech and my thought processing in various ways of responding to people. And actually I felt much more confident of myself when people started going up to me, and they're saying like wow, you're a very interesting person, where are you from, even though I felt like disconnected from the world, I just wanted to be part of society, and you know I'm happy that it's finally happening. And I'm living a very happy life right now, I'm producing a lot of really great artwork. I feel like I can fully comprehend my teacher's direction, and I feel very confident in myself, that I will succeed in the future.
