There are many reasons other than appearance to shed belly fat. Lauren Antonucci, M.S., R.D., C.S.S.D., C.D.E., C.D.N., Owner/Director of Nutrition Energy, NYC, tells us why it's important to trim down that area and how to do so.
Lauren: Belly fat: nobody wants it, we don't like seeing it on ourselves, and we now also know that it raises our risk of cardiovascular disease. So this is something we really want to tackle. As a group, there are many supplements out there, people are trying to convince you to do all sorts of things to reduce your belly fat. But what really works? Changing your diet and adding some exercise. Of course in addition to balanced healthy eating and exercise, the safest, most proven and most affective way to reduce belly fat is to really shift the types of fats you're eating from processed, saturated fats, trans fats, try to really reduce those and increase our intake of good fats, omega 3 fats. What are those types of foods? Fatty fish, including salmon and mackerel, we have walnuts, we have olives, avocado, olive oil, most of our nuts and seeds. These are the type of foods that when you eat as a replacement for the unhealthy or saturated or processed fats, will really make a difference in your overall health, but also to belly fat.
