Stress Management Series / Diffusing Stress

About this video:

Debbie Mandel, a stress management expert, discusses ways to calm yourself down when you are having a stress episode. When we are stressed, it is difficult to think clearly and level-headed about the situation at hand, we can easily overreact and do something that we will later regret. So what's the best advice for diffusing yourself? The key is to view the entire picture after you have stepped away, and given yourself time to calm yourself down.

Transcript:

Debbie: When you are experiencing a stress episode, to treat it I won't tell you to immediately re-frame the negative into a positive, you're too upset, and you've got powerful hormones coursing through your body. I'm gonna tell you to do what neanderthal man did, move it out. Walk off those stress hormones, exercise them out. Strength training, or whatever you enjoy, because when you move them out of your body you can think straight. The problem when you're stressed is that you're hyper vigilant, you think you've seen everything, you know everything, and you're all powerful because of the hormones. But, you're going to send that e-mail that you never should have sent, and you are going to regret it. So, take a walk, put on your headphones, get out into the light, and move it out of your body. When you have done that, you are now ready to re-frame the negative into a positive, because you're brain has been oxygenated. So think it through, what am I not seeing about this picture? There are no winners or losers, that's when we get stress; there are only equitable compromises.
