Donnette’s passion is volunteering. She has had numerous heart operations but before her first, a volunteer visited her from Mended Hearts. Mended Hearts is a volunteer organization that sends former heart patients to visit patients in hospitals. As Donnette says “The nurses said you’ll be okay but they couldn’t tell me what it was going to be like to have a breathing tube in my throat, or how it would feel to wake up with my chest stapled back together. So to talk to someone who was up walking and back at work – It meant the world to me, stopped my tears and I felt so much better!” It had such a big impact on her that she vowed to work for them when she recovered. She started her local chapter and now sits on Mended Hearts’ board as well. MoreLess
